About Bucovina

Bucovina’s painted monasteries, unique monuments in the world

Bucovina’s churches with exterior and interior murals are unique in Europe, which is why they have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Built mostly by the Moldavian voivodes of the Musat Dynasty, these superb monasteries served as princely tombs. It is said that the Moldavian voivoda Stefan cel Mare had a church or monastery built after each battle won against the Turks, during his 47 year reign.

The churches follow the Byzantine style, but also show openness to Renaissance humanism and art. Their most outstanding and original legacy is the murals that completely cover the outside walls of the churches.
